π Global Trade Dependence of Agriculture and Food Products
Global trade in agriculture and food products reached $4,758 billion in 2022, marking a 31% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019. Agriculture and food products accounted for 9.4% of total global merchandise trade in 2022, with food alone constituting 86% of this trade.
In 2022, 59 countries recorded a trade surplus (with a value exceeding $100 million) in agriculture and food products, while 105 countries experienced a trade deficit (with a value exceeding $100 million).
Brazil boasted the largest trade surplus in agriculture and food products in 2022, amounting to $131 billion, followed by Argentina with $48 billion. Canada, Indonesia, the Netherlands, and Australia followed closely, each with a surplus ranging from $35 to $39 billion.
Conversely, China recorded the largest trade deficit in agriculture and food products in 2022, totaling $194 billion. Japan followed with a deficit of $80 billion, trailed by the United Kingdom with $40 billion, the United States with $38 billion, South Korea with $36 billion, and Germany with $26 billion.
