As of 2023, 57 countries produced cocoa beans, the main ingredient in chocolate. Ivory Coast was the largest producer of cocoa by a significant margin and represented 42% of the global cocoa supply, an increase from 38% the previous year.
Ivory Coast and Ghana, collectively produce over 3 million metric tonnes, an output that, according to FAO data, surpasses the entire combined production of the rest of the world. This duopoly highlights a critical structural element of the global chocolate supply chain: its profound dependence on the agricultural output, climate stability, and economic health of just two nations. This heavy concentration not only dictates market dynamics but also places these countries at the forefront of global conversations around commodity pricing, sustainable farming practices, and the economic well-being of millions of smallholder farmers who form the base of this multi-billion-dollar industry.
