Brazil's national flag is one of the few in the world where each star in its celestial sphere directly represents a specific state or federal district, with the positions of the stars reflecting the sky over Rio de Janeiro on the morning of November 15, 1889, the exact moment the republic was proclaimed. The 27 stars span nine constellations, from the brightness of Sirius marking Mato Grosso to the faint Sigma Octantis representing the Distrito Federal, making the flag a frozen astronomical snapshot as much as a national symbol.
