Bond yields are rising around the world. Canada's 10-year rate hit 4.0% this week, up from 3.45% in July and its highest level since October 2023. In France, it's the highest since 2008.
When yields go up, Ottawa pays more to borrow, and so do you. At today's rate, all of Ottawa's market debt would cost $63 billion a year. That's about $1,515 for every Canadian.
