Although women make up more than half of the population, their share among criminal suspects remains consistently at just about a quarter—and among inmates, they are even less represented, at only five percent.
However, in areas such as prostitution or child neglect, women are more frequently perpetrators, often due to societal roles and life circumstances. The reasons for these differences are complex and highlight how strongly crime is shaped by social factors.
