Nuclear power plants out, nuclear power in?

In 2023, the last nuclear power stations in Germany were taken off the grid. Since 2024, domestic nuclear energy production has officially stood at zero. At the same time, the estimated share of nuclear electricity in Germany’s electricity imports has been rising noticeably since 2022. At first glance, this appears to be a contradiction, but in fact it is primarily a consequence of the European electricity market. Germany buys electricity from wherever it is cheapest at the time, often from countries with a high share of nuclear power such as France, Switzerland or Belgium. The import mix simply reflects their generation mix.
