In the EU, state pensions cover retirement expenses in only four countries – Romania, Czechia, Poland and Spain – while in the remaining countries there is often a significant pension gap. There is a wide spectrum between Croatia, with a deficit of around 40%, and countries such as Bulgaria and Denmark, where the gap is less than 10%. However, gross pension says little about how comfortable life in retirement actually is.
In most countries, the state pension is more of a basic provision than a full pension, making private provision and a close look at your own pension gap essential. If you want to know how well your pension fits your desired lifestyle, you can use Datapulse's interactive retirement tool to calculate your personal gap for 30 countries.
