Unemployment rates across Europe have declined significantly over the past decade.
This set of small multiple line charts shows unemployment trends for European countries from 2013 to 2024, with each country compared to the European Union average (EU-27). While most countries follow the overall downward trend, the biggest improvements occur in places that started the decade with very high unemployment.
Countries such as Greece, Spain, Serbia, North Macedonia, and Croatia show some of the steepest declines over the period. At the same time, several countries in Northern and Central Europe maintain consistently low unemployment levels.
A few notable patterns stand out in the dataset:
• Czechia records the lowest unemployment in Europe
• North Macedonia starts the decade with the highest unemployment rate
• Montenegro shows the largest increase during the COVID-19 shock
• Latvia closely follows the EU average trend
Overall, the visualization highlights how unemployment across Europe has gradually converged toward lower levels over the past decade.
