The Global Peace Index (GPI), created by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), measures how peaceful a country is by looking at “Negative Peace”, which simply means the absence of violence or the fear of violence.
Iceland ranks first on the Global Peace Index, with a score of 1.16, making it the most peaceful country in the 163-country ranking, according to the IEP.
At the opposite end, Russia ranks last with a score of 3.367.
Because a higher score indicates lower levels of peacefulness, Russia’s score is 2.9 times higher than Iceland’s.
Only nine countries score above 3.0, placing them in the least peaceful tier: Syria, Yemen, Afghanistan, South Sudan, Israel, Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, and Russia.
