Sicily and Sardinia are the two largest islands in Italy, each showing distinct patterns of population distribution. Sicily has a population density of around 190 people per square kilometer, concentrated in the metropolitan areas of Palermo, Catania and Messina. Coastal cities such as Syracuse, Gela and Trapani also show higher densities compared to the island’s interior, where rural and mountainous zones have lower population levels.
Sardinia, in contrast, has a much lower population density of about 68 people per square kilometer. The highest concentrations are found in and around Cagliari, Sassari and Olbia, while the central and mountainous areas such as Nuoro remain sparsely populated. These differences reflect variations in geography, economic activity, and historical settlement patterns between the two islands.
