Over the past eight years, wages in Germany have risen by 27% in nominal terms, but adjusted for inflation, this amounts to a meagre 1.3%, while housing costs are rising much faster in many places. In 26 districts, single-person households now have to spend more than 30% of their net income on a 50 m² flat, more than four times as many regions as in 2014.
In metropolitan areas such as Berlin, Munich and their surrounding areas in particular, rent is eating into wage increases. For example, software developers in Berlin now earn over €1,100 more than in 2016, but can afford 14 m² less living space.
