Samsung overtakes Apple
🍎🤼♀️ Samsung regains global leadership in smartphone sales, overtaking Apple in the first quarter of 2024!
Samsung reached 60.1 million units sold and Apple, 50.1 million. Xiaomi secured third position, with sales of 40.8 million mobile devices.
The data comes from the International Data Corporation (IDC), which published quarterly results for the global smartphone market. See the main highlights:
📈 Global growth: Global smartphone shipments increased 7.8% year-on-year to 289.4 million units in the first quarter of 2024 (1Q24). This is the third consecutive quarter of growth, indicating a solid market recovery.
🏆 Market leaders: Apple achieved leadership at the end of 2023, but Samsung regained its position as the main smartphone supplier in 1Q24 and both companies are expected to continue dominating the high end market segment.
🇨🇳 Brand dynamics: Huawei is resurgent in China and other Chinese brands such as Xiaomi, Transsion, OPPO/OnePlus/Vivo are also making significant gains, which could lead to greater competition and diversification. Oppo is part of the BBK Electronics group, which also includes other well-known brands such as OnePlus and Vivo (which is why they appear together).
💵 Market value and Average Selling Prices (ASPs): There has been continued growth in average selling prices, suggesting that consumers are investing in more expensive devices with the intention of using them for longer periods.
🤼 Changes between the main brands: Xiaomi has recovered well from drops in indicators over the last 2 years, and Transsion has taken its place in the top 5, establishing a strong international presence. Despite the negative growth for Apple and Samsung in the first quarter, the study indicates that Samsung appears to be in a relatively stronger position to continue leading the market.
