China’s electric vehicle makers have widened their lead over Western rivals, underscoring the country’s growing dominance in the global auto industry. Between August 2024 and August 2025, BYD delivered 2.56 million battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, according to data from SNE Research. The Shenzhen-based group outpaced domestic competitor Geely and US-based Tesla, which delivered 985,000 vehicles over the same period.
The rankings highlight a structural shift in the EV market. Chinese manufacturers now account for four of the top six positions, benefiting from scale, vertically integrated supply chains and strong domestic demand. European carmakers lag behind: Volkswagen delivered 854,000 vehicles, while BMW and Stellantis remained below 400,000. Tesla’s position in third place reflects intensifying competition in China, where local brands have expanded rapidly across both mass-market and premium segments.
As governments debate tariffs and industrial policy, the data suggest the centre of gravity in electric mobility is firmly placed in China.
