How Many EVs are Registered in Each State?
What We’re Showing
The number of electric vehicle registrations as of Dec. 31, 2022 by U.S. state.
Only all-electric vehicles are included in the counts, plug-in hybrid EVs are not included.
Figures are approximate and come from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center.
Californians Lead EV Adoption
California leads the country by far in number of EVs registered, with the 904,000 registered EVs making up 37% of the country’s total of 2.4 million.
The popularity of EVs in California is apparent, as well as the state government’s support of them. In 2024, California approved a $1.9 billion investment plan into expanding EV charging stations across the state.
On a federal level, the U.S. government is also pushing for wider EV adoption, with a goal set in late 2021 of having half of all new vehicles sold in the U.S. in 2030 be zero-emission vehicles.
