The numbers say yes. Over the past decade, most EU countries have cut both their overall and alcohol-related road deaths, in many cases substantially. Romania leads the field with a 71% drop in alcohol-related fatalities since 2011.
But the picture is far from uniform. Lithuania halved its overall road deaths in the same period, yet its alcohol-related fatalities actually rose. Slovenia shows a similar split, a reminder that broader road-safety gains do not automatically translate into progress on drink-driving.
