In 1970, more than 21,000 people died on the roads; in 2023, the figure was 2,750. Laws such as speed limits and mandatory seatbelt and helmet use have saved thousands of lives. However, alcohol remains a persistent problem, and rural roads are and remain by far the most dangerous routes. They alone account for 58% of all fatal accidents. The first figures for 2025 are a warning: Road safety remains a key issue, especially in view of the holiday season and winter months.
