In 2025, Tesla lost its position as the world’s largest electric-vehicle maker to China’s BYD. BYD’s EV sales reached a record 2.26 million units, surpassing Tesla’s 1.64 million units by 38%. BYD’s EV production also climbed to 2.22 million units, 34% higher than Tesla’s 1.65 million units.
